Welcome to SAWG: The Official San Antonio Writers' Guild website

The San Antonio Writers' Guild is an organization for writers of all genres and all levels of experience. Our purpose is to share information among our fellow writers and help each other grow in our craft. Through contests, critiques, newsletters, and our website, we seek to provide assistance and encouragement to writers of all skill levels. Come to a meeting for friendly, invaluable fellowship.

COME TO A MEETING

A best first step for any new or established writer, whether you are new to the San Antonio area or have lived here for a long time, is to come to our meeting on the first Thursday of every month. There you will find advice, support and encouragement from like-minded people in your genre. Each meeting offers workshops, programs, and a chance to make new acquaintances, friends, and connections in the industry, from beginning writers to established editors.

Following our Thursday meeting, we hold critique sessions divided by genre.

On June 6, we will once again meet at Bethany Congregational Church
500 Pilgrim Dr
San Antonio, TX 78213

Our speaker for June will be Robert Jackson Bennett, Austin-based speculative fiction author.

He will be speaking on finding your author's voice. His debut Mr. Shivers won the Shirley Jackson award as well as the Sydney J. Bounds Newcomer Award. His second novel, The Company Man, won a Special Citation of Excellence from the Philip K. Dick Award, as well as an Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original. His third novel, The Troupe, has topped many "Best of 2012" lists, including that of Publishers Weekly. His fourth novel, American Elsewhere, is now out to wide acclaim.

He lives in Austin with his wife and son. He can be found on Twitter at @robertjbennett.

His website is http://robertjacksonbennett.wordpress.com.

Future Write-ins will be July 13, September 14, and November 9, 2013.

Future Critiques:

May 22 - LaTaza, 15060 San Pedro, 7-9 p.m.

SAN ANTONIO WRITERS' GUILD CONTESTS

The San Antonio Writers' Guild hosts two annual contests.

The annual contest with a first Thursday in October deadline is a multi-category contest which accepts fiction, non-fiction, and poetry entries. Word limit depends on the entry. The rules for 2013 are posted in the CONTESTS tab (above). You do not have to be a member of SAWG to enter.

The guild also sponsors the Louise Stewart contest, which has a deadline of the first Thursday in April. The contest is closed for 2013, but the 2014 guidelines are now on this site. The Louise Stewart contest is for members only and is an essay, story, or even poetry on a very specific subject that changes from year to year. Go to the CONTESTS tab (above) for information.
